For the 2023 summer season, living on the west coast of British Columbia, I have been painting en plein air and assisting my husband Bob with our commercial fishing business of over 45 years. We have just spent fishing time in Coal Harbour, one of the most northern harbours on Vancouver Island.
Coal Harbour is a fascinating, historical location. Among many turns of events, it has been a home base to the Royal Canadian Airforce during WW2, and later a whale processing station. Currently it houses a museum of its fascinating past and is a hub of seaplane and boating traffic for sports fishing lodges, commercial fishing offloading and active 1st Nations participation in the business of the North Coast.
In a quiet waterfront meadow, from our retro motorhome, I have painted scenes from the harbour, whilst Bob has left the secure harbour to fish the open sea off the west coast of Vancouver Island.
Please enjoy my rendition and Youtube demo of the fishing vessels at rest in this quiet harbour: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0IQVsFSg9fA

GREETINGS FROM North Vancouver!

Dear BC/IWS CANADA Members,

Hello everybody and so happy to feel the sun warming up in all areas of British Columbia… some of you may also be getting ready for some Plein Air painting and I hope all your new adventures are successful.

Did you know that the last Sunday of every month the IWS Canada has a “Show & Tell” open to any member that would like to show their latest piece of art or get critique, or simply admire and participate to support others. This is a great way to connect with other artists that may be having the same challenges that you are or share or your successes too! The invitation usually comes by email to participate via Zoom. I encourage you to try it and participate.

I have a few workshops and events to share, but if you have an Art event or you are giving any workshops coming up that you want me to pass on to others, digital or live, please let me know, our community will grow by supporting each other and we will all benefit from it!

Last but not least a warm Welcome to Heather Mersey from West Vancouver, our newest member in BC, so happy to have you as part of our growing group!

As always I am available for any suggestions you may have and let’s paint and have fun!!!

Watercolour News from the BC region

GREETINGS FROM North Vancouver!

Dear BC/IWS CANADA Members,

Hope you have been very busy preparing for a great year ahead in your Art Practice, but not without first taking temporary refuge in some warm place in the world during our Canadian winter… I certainly did just that! February saw me taking advantage of many warm tropical strolls by the beach in my beautiful hometown of Acapulco, Mexico, after a marathon painting session preparing for a solo exhibition here in Canada.

Did you go anywhere this winter that you may like to share some pictures for inspiration to all of us?

Have you been working hard in a series of paintings or preparing for a show, or simply did you make a painting that turned out amazing and you would love to share?

Here is some important information I would like to share with you today as well as some of my pictures that may inspire you to paint.

Please remember I am always open for suggestions and also always available to you should you need anything within my reach, or anything you want to share with us regarding your Art Practice… workshops, exhibitions, etc. please share!

Introducing International Representative Ingrid Lefevre

My name is Ingrid Lefevre and i live in Ghent, the flemish and northern part of Belgium. I was very happy and honoured when IWS Canada asked me to be the representative for the artists members who do not live in Canada.

I had the joy to travel for the first time to Canada after being selected for the international IWS exhibition in Richmond Hill in 2018. Which was an unforgettable experience and the link was made between Canada and Belgium. I am also an active member of IWS Belgium and of the AFB (french speaking painters of Belgium), participating in several exhibitions. I give occasional workshops realistic watercolor portrait. Which is my favourite subject and style. I have been drawing for a long time, watercolor i started about 9 years ago. My greatest joy is to create and to try to improve with each painting. And to transmit emotions and expressions of my subjects to the viewer.  To share a passion with friends artists and enjoy friendship through art. Because art has no frontiers.

Introducing Shawna Lampi-Legaree

NWT area rep Shawna Lampi-Legaree has lived in Canada’s far north for the last 35 years. Her love of watercolour began long before she learned to paint She realized that if she wanted to paint that she had to create a group to help with that objective. So, over the winter of 2005/2006 the Yellowknife Watercolour Society was born. Shawna has been painting full time since 2012. Her passion with watercolour is flowers.

Introducing Alice Bottrill

my name is Alice Bottrill and I work and teach in my home studio in North Vancouver, BC. Living in this very active art community gives me the opportunity to work with the local watercolour artists from time to time, and compare with artists working on acrylic and oil. we are still the minority, however, but we are definitely growing!! More watercolours are being accepted by the local galleries and community exhibitions. People are falling in love with watercolour once they try it!! I truly enjoy being a member of IWS Canada and as an area rep. The IWS Youth program is getting on to a very good start, we have 4 kids coming monthly for regular classes. our IWS members in BC increased from 3 to 13 within the last month, so I am looking forward to a future event where we can meet up with members in other area to share the joy of watercolour painting in the future. Introducing Renee Lippa

Renee Lippa My name is Renee Lippa and I paint in my home studio in Sherwood Park, AB. Working in watercolour is without a doubt a passion of mine and I love being able to share my work. Oil and acrylics are the dominant medium in Alberta but year after year I see watercolour making a come back.  A lot of artists that create in other mediums express their fear of watercolour. I hope by being a member and an area rep for IWS to be help change that perception with the help of other talented and enthusiastic watercolorists in my community. For info on my work, visit my facebook page Renee Lippa Fine Art.

Introducing Nancy Newman

Hello IWS! My name is Nancy Newman, (Nancy Newman Art) and I live in Aurora, Ontario, which is just north of Toronto. Aurora is a fast growing town, but still has the small town feel. We are lucky to have the Aurora Cultural Centre as a hub for art, music and theatre. I have been the watercolour instructor there for the past 10 years. It is great to be part of IWS Canada and as an area rep I look forward to meeting you and participating in some local and online activities that celebrate our facinating medium of watercolour. My facebook for art is Nancy Newman Art.
